Acupuncture for chronic pain

This is an edited transcript (to make it easier to read!), and just to give the beginning of the story some context, Bernard’s wife had been to see me for shoulder pain and when it worked for her she decided Bernard needed to come!  The other bit of background to know is that Bernard was in the army, fighting I think in Malaya and that he loves turning wood to make bowls or sculptures.

Annya

Bernard: My wife made an appointment for me, unbeknown to me, so arm up me back, she took me there. The reason being that I had spinal pain. And my arms, legs, feet, you name it, it hurt.

Some of it was rheumatics from being in swamps for years and getting blown up, which doesn’t help. Right. But I’ve never looked back since.

Interviewer: How did you find Annya when you went to see her?

Bernard: It was like meeting an old friend. We discussed things and I found her so easy to talk to and confide in. I was there for about an hour and she was making notes.  When I left there, I felt, well, like I’m leaving a friend.

After about two to three visits, I began to feel the benefit of it.

It’s made so much difference to my life. I’ve got something to look forward to. I can stand much longer. I can work in my workshop my legs without switching off and having a rest because I can’t stand the pain of standing up anymore. And with wood carving, I can twist around and bend about when I’m doing anything, carving anything big. It’s made a terrific difference.

Interviewer: How often do you go now?

Bernard: Approximately every six weeks. Just more or less to top up, so to speak.

Interviewer: You were on medication for some years before you had acupuncture, is that right?

Bernard: Oh, yes. I used to take quite a lot of painkillers and other tablets, but I don’t take painkillers now unless I get a terrific headaches, which happens sometimes.

Interviewer: Did you have any concerns about the needles?

Bernard: It’s interesting. Well, I thought well try anything at once, but as long as they’re not knitting needles! (In fact) they’re so small. I didn’t even know they were going in.
